In October 2017, the Institute for Water Resource (IWR) challenged the Waterborne Commerce Statistics (WCS) Team nationwide with finding efficiencies in data collection and processing on the WCS mission. The Planning Center of Expertise for Inland Navigation's Data Management Branch located within LRH, which processes approximately forty percent of the nation's Waterborne Commerce Statistics annually, decided to focus on increasing automation, and in turn reducing data entry.
