SUMMERSVILLE, W.Va. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will temporarily stop flows below the Summersville Dam on the Gauley River beginning Feb. 25, 2014, as part of its ongoing inspection effort.
The outflow tunnel will be dewatered and a crew of engineers and lake personnel will access thetunnel to perform a routine inspection.
Summersville Resource Manager, Toby Wood said, “This inspection is the last phase of the work that started in November of 2013. Future tunnel inspections will be scheduled in 10-year cycles, with the next one planned for 2021.”
Once the inspection has concluded, filling the tunnel will take approximately 90 minutes. Flows are expected to return to normal operation on the evening of Feb. 26, 2014.
