Volunteers Needed for National Public Lands Day Event Oct. 4 at East Lynn Lake

Huntington, W.Va. –  As part of National Public Lands Day on Oct. 4, 2014, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at East Lynn Lake in East Lynn, W.Va., will welcome volunteers to help with trail maintenance, and shoreline and backcountry area clean-up.

Volunteers around the nation will visit their favorite parks, beaches, wildlife preserves, or forests on that day and help improve these treasured places. National Public Lands Day is the largest, single-day volunteer event for public lands in the United States.

The day is a celebration of the work, play and learning that takes place on public lands every day. Last year more than 175,000 Americans participated at more than 2,200 sites in all 50 states, Guam, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C.

WHO: Volunteers, including individuals and groups.  

WHAT: Hiking trail maintenance, shoreline and back country area cleanup. Volunteers should bring work shoes / boots and gloves. Those who wish to pick up trash along the lake may use their personal boat and deposit collected trash at any boat ramp. Drinking water will be provided.

WHEN: Saturday, October 4, 2014 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The sign-up begins at 7:30 a.m.

WHERE: East Lynn Lake, 683 Overlook Trail Road, East Lynn, W.Va. All volunteers are to meet at the Lakeside Marina Boat Ramp at 8 a.m.

All volunteers who plan on participating in the event are encouraged to sign up prior to the event. 

 Eight federal agencies will participate along with more than 250 state, county, and city partners and a host of non-profit groups, including the Student Conservation Association, The Corps Network, Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of the USA. The event’s national corporate sponsor for the 16th consecutive year Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc. Northrop Grumman has been a contributing sponsor for 6 years.

National Public Lands Day is coordinated by The National Environmental Education Foundation. NEEF is the nation’s leading organization in lifelong environmental learning, connecting people to knowledge they use to improve the quality of their lives and the health of the planet.
