  • Sutton Lake to Temporarily Lower Winter Pool Level

    SUTTON, W.Va. - - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Sutton Lake will temporarily lower the winter pool level an additional 30 feet (to elevation 865 feet) for two weeks beginning Dec. 1, 2019, to complete a required maintenance dive of the dam.

    HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Summersville Lake continues efforts to get the recreation areas at Sutton Lake in Sutton, W.Va., open to the public. The Gerald Freeman Campground is scheduled to reopen on Friday, July 8. Some campsites will remain closed. Visitors are encouraged to minimize the number of vehicles they bring. Parking on the grass will not be permitted. The South Abutment Day Use Area reopened today (Wednesday, July 6).

    Recent heavy rainfall raised both Summersville and Sutton Lakes in West Virginia above the normal summer pool elevation, forcing the temporary closure of some of the campgrounds and recreation areas at each location. As both lakes return to their normal summer pool levels, those sites are being opened.
