    Training for Field Supervisors and Rangers

    Every two years the USACE Huntington District conducts training for their field supervisors and rangers at the Mine Safety and Health Academy in Beaver, WV. This video gives you an inside look at how this training goes down.

    Bluestone Dam Final Anchor Ribbon Cutting

    A ceremony to celebrate the installation of the final anchors in the Bluestone Dam on the New River at Hinton, W.Va., took place Dec. 7, 2018. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and its Phase 4 contractor are finalizing the installation of 278 high strength steel strand anchors in the spillway and non-overflow monoliths. Nearly 500 total anchors have been installed to date, which help increase the dam’s flood storage capacity. This represents a significant investment to an important piece of West Virginia infrastructure which helps reduce flood hazards to the entire New and Kanawha River valleys, all the way through Charleston and to the Point Pleasant and beyond on the Ohio River. To date, Bluestone Dam has helped reduced flood damages in excess of $5 billion

    Andrew Auxier Receives Award

    Andrew Auxier was presented with an Achievement Medal for Civilian Service for his outstanding performance as a Local Government Liaison for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in direct support to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) during the 2017 hurricane season. He was deployed for more than 45 days in response to hurricanes Irma and Maria coordinating support for local governments. His professionalism and dedication to service reflects credit upon himself and the United States Army.

    ​The Business Opportunities Open House (BOOH) was held on Tuesday, 27 November 2018, at the St. Mary's Conference Center. Over 200 firms registered to attend to meet and talk with PDT members, SME's from across our organization, and senior leaders, to learn WHAT we do and HOW they can help LRH meet mission goals.
  • MG Toy Visits Supplemental Project Sites

    MG Mark Toy visited supplemental projects in Martin and Paintsville, Ky. as well as Milton W.Va. to gain an appreciation of their status. MG Toy was able to meet with project team members, partners from the WVNG and visit businesses that will directly benefit from the projects once completed.

The Pittsburgh District and the Huntington District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently partnered to conduct a stream assessment in Belmont County, Ohio. Ty Bintrim, northern branch chief, explains some of the metrics that go into evaluating streams, and why it is important to pay attention.

    Halloween Spooktacular with Bobber

    This year’s Halloween Spooktacular with Bobber was held at the Burnsville Lake Riffle Run Campground. Participants enjoyed learning about water safety. Additionally, they made and took home a canvas painting of Bobberto remind them to be safe during Halloween. Bobber the water safety dog promoted checking your candy just like you check your life jacket!Campers and community members participated in a scavenger hunt in which kids got to learn about the Riffle Run Campground and our staff.
  • Science and Sutton Lake go hand in hand!

    ​We are excited about our partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and WV DNR on this mussel study! USFWS, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the WVDNR partnered together to test the feasibility of extensively culturing freshwater mussels in three U.S. Army Corps of Engineer reservoirs in WV. USFWS and the WVDNR placed three cages with ~30 Largemouth bass infested with Pocketbook glochidia (larval mussels) in Sutton reservoir on 6/7/2018.
  • The Huntington District Housing Team Responds to Hurricane Florence

    The LRH Emergency Management team are working closely with FEMA and Wilmington District to aid in hurricane relief efforts. FEMA, in coordination with USACE have overhauled the previously laborious and more expensive method of installing mobile homes for personnel that were left homeless. The new process involves purchasing existing stock (new) recreational homes (travel trailers) and installing them on site. These units are easier to procure and transport, faster to install and locate the storm victim closer to their former residence ultimately promoting a sense of community and security while allowing easier access to assist in repairs to their home.
  • FEMA Region 3 Geospatial Support

    The LRH Geospatial Team of Stephen Caldwell, David Chestnut, James Vassar, Danielle Endicott and Mack McCarty responded to a Mission Assignment for FEMA Region 3 in Danville, VA. While no major flooding developed during the assignment, the LRH team was able to utilize their state of the art equipment and technology utilized by the team in possible response scenarios. The demonstration included mobile LiDAR, terrestrial LiDAR,real time GNSS collection and UAV technology. The team plans to follow up with FEMA Region 3 to develop a complete suite of services to have the capability to respond in future requests.

    Andrew Keffer’s ERDC-U experiences to benefit Huntington District

    A US Army Engineer Research and Development Center announcement, coupled with a past participant's discussions, led Huntington District Civil Engineer Andrew Keffer to apply for ERDC University, where district selectees partner with ERDC subject matter experts to apply and implement technical solutions relevant to division and district challenges.

  • Cost Engineer of the Year Award

    Brandon was highly commended for his exceptional performance and contribution to the cost engineering community of practice 1 January 2017 to 31 December 2017. Mr. Scott, serving as a Lead Cost Engineer and DOE IIS subject matter expert on multiple mega-projects critical to the Nation,performed his duties in a creative and dedicated manner promoting high standards of excellence in cost engineering. These achievements were the result of his personal dedication, professionalism, and can-do attitude reflecting great credit on himself, the cost engineering profession,Huntington District, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

    Jeff Bare, Maintenance Mechanic Racine Locks And Dam, receives Commanders coin from COL Evers for his outstanding leadership, and mentoring of federal employees over the past 35+ years of federal service.

    Runner up for the USACE Meritorious Logistician of the Year

    Jeffrey Lee of the Huntington District Logistics Office was selected as the runner up for the USACE Meritorious Logistician of the Year Award. His demonstrated meritorious achievement with the USACE Logistics Activity, Great Lakes and Ohio River Division and the Huntington District has resulted in the Huntington District’s supply program becoming one of the best in all of USACE. .
  • Huntington District Welcomes New Commander

    Today the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Huntington District welcomed its new commander, Col. Jason Evers, in a ceremony at the Huntington City Hall Auditorium. The ceremony was presided over by Maj. Gen. Mark Toy, Commanding General of the Great Lakes and Ohio River Division. Col. Evers is now responsible for carrying out the District’s mission within the Ohio River Basin, which includes more than 300 navigable miles of the Ohio River in West Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio, plus nine major tributaries.
  • Army Corps employee born on 4th of July turns 80 on Independence Day

    It seems only fitting that a man with more than 50 years of federal civilian service to his country would be born on the Fourth of July. "Sharing a July Fourth birthday with the United States has always been a good day for me," said Michael Spoor, a physical scientist and engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Huntington District. Spoor turns 80 this Independence Day. He is the eldest of three children and was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, to Ferris and Leona Spoor.
  • 7th Annual Water Safety Fireworks Display at Fishtrap Lake

    The Corps water safety booth was manned by Brett Salyers, Travis Coleman, Magan Boyd, Glenda Robinson and Heather Coleman. It delivered a safe boating / water safety message that included placing life vests on adults and kids alike, illustrating the purpose, proper size / fit, and how to wear the life vest. Water safety information was given to most in attendance. Fireworks were displayed off Fishtrap Dam at 9:45pm for approximately 30 minutes.

    ​LRD Commanding General Visits Bluestone Dam

    BG (P) Toy, Commanding General, Great Lakes and Ohio River Division visited Bluestone Dam to gain a greater appreciation of the current status of the Bluestone Dam Safety Assurance (DSA) Mega Project and tour Bluestone Dam and its active construction sites. He was able to develop a better understanding and give support for implementation of procured work as well as Phase 5 as approved by a 2017 Dam Safety Modification Report Supplement (DSMRS).
  • Wetland Delineation and Identification Training

    LRH Regulatory hosted a Wetland Delineation and Identification Training in Columbus, Ohio 4 June - 8 June 2018. Twenty-five attendees representing LRH, LRE, LRC, LRL, Omaha District, Rock Island District, St. Louis District, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Natural Resources Conservation Service attended the week long training that consisted of both lecture and field components.
