Representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers met with the public at the Zoar Levee in Zoar, Ohio, on Aug. 21, 2019. The Corps is conducting archaeological investigations in the area of the levee in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. Section 106 requires that actions taken on federal property, using federal funds, or under federal permits must take into account impacts to historic properties (archaeological sites, historic structures, historic landscapes) that are listed on, or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Since Zoar Village is a National Historic Landmark, the Corps must take great care in identifying historic properties and eliminating or reducing any adverse effects to these properties that result from repairs to the levee.
