The Sutton Lake Project partnered with the American Chestnut Foundation and GSC to plant American Chestnut trees. Thirty-six seedings were planted at our new Chestnut orchard, which is located on the knoll below the Bee Run Fee machine. . The original orchard planted last year is accessed by using the road at the Jerimiah Carpenter trailhead in Bee Run Day Use Area. It is approximately a half mile hike to it. Last years planting was a huge success with 41 of 45 seedlings surviving. The flowers or bloom from these sprouts is what is needed to further the research and aid in the eventual reestablishment of the native chestnut tree. Planting was done in conjunction with American Chestnut Foundation (Mark Double President), Jimmy Jenkins, Amy Metheny, GSC and the USACE.
