Volunteers celebrated National Public Lands Day on Sept. 27, 2014, by taking part in a cleanup at Dewey Lake in Van Lear, Ky.

More than a ton of litter filled 64 garbage bags as 21 volunteers gathered trash and debris from the lake’s shoreline and surface.

Each volunteers donated four hours of work. Among the items gathered were tires, coolers, buckets, styrofoam and metal debris.

Participants included the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Paintsville Kiwanis, Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, Carl D. Perkins Job Corps, Jenny Wiley State Park, and Dewey Lake Fish and Game Club. Special thanks to radio stations WSIP and WMDJ for their promotional efforts.
