Project Description

This project was completed in April 2002.

Authority:  Section 206 of the Water Resources Development Act 1996,  P. L. 104-303

Location: The proposed project is located in the Town of Boone, Watauga County, North Carolina along 1,500 feet of the South Fork New River, a National Heritage River.  Watauga County is approximately 100 miles northwest of Charlotte in the mountainous region of the state.  The proposed stream restoration work is located just to the north of Elizabeth Drive on the East Side of Boone.

Recommended Plan: The recommended plan involves plantings to improve riparian vegetation along the streambank that will result in improved shading, stream cover, and bank stability.  Constructing in-stream structures along 1,500 feet of stream to create grade control meanders, riffle pool sequences, and aquatic habitat; and placement of boulder clusters will help to diversify the substrate

Non-Federal Sponsor:  North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources,  Division of Water Quality
